Diversity of resident plant communities could weaken their allelopathic resistance against alien and native invaders

چکیده

Abstract Elton’s classic diversity-invasibility hypothesis posits that diversity of resident communities increases resistance against invaders. We tested whether the relationsip might be mediated by allelopathic effects species. In a large germination experiment, we exposed seeds six alien and native test species to leachates one, three, or twelve The tended slightly delay germination, almost all single-species reduced proportion germinated seeds. Nevertheless, overall effect plant leachate mixtures on was not significant. This because higher increased seeds, particularly for Among species, it only most invasive one benefited from leachates, just like natives did. Overall, our findings suggest allelopathy diverse does provide but could actually facilitate

Native and alien plant species inventory and diversity in disturbed forests and its economic value

The study was conducted to assess the native and alien plant species in one of the highly disturbed forest (S1) and less disturbed forest (S2) in Mt. Manunggal, Cebu Island, Philippines. Twenty-four quadrats with a size of 20mx20 m were established using a quadrat sampling technique to identify and record all plant species. Diversity indices were utilized to determine species abundance, richnes...

Alien invaders

Thousands of species have invaded new territories in recent decades, often aided by global trade and man-made habitat change. While many remain harmless, some may cause serious damage. Therefore, we need improvements in surveillance and in our understanding of which factors make a successful invasion possible.

Co-invaders: The effects of alien parasites on native hosts

We define co-introduced parasites as those which have been transported with an alien host to a new locality, outside of their natural range, and co-invading parasites as those which have been co-introduced and then spread to new, native hosts. Of 98 published studies of co-introductions, over 50% of hosts were freshwater fishes and 49% of parasites were helminths. Although we would expect paras...

Impact threshold for an alien plant invader, Lantana camara L., on native plant communities

Alien plant invaders significantly threaten native community diversity, although it is poorly understood whether invasion initiates a linear or non-linear loss of resident species. Where low abundances of an invader have little impact on native species diversity, then a threshold level may exist, above which native communities rapidly decline. Our aim was to assess the broadscale effects of an ...
